Breitenbush Hot Springs is a retreat and wellness center located about 50 miles east of Salem in the Cascade Mountains, near the tiny town of Detroit. Breitenbush is part learning center, offering over 150 multi-day workshops each year (self-improvement, spirituality, yoga, massage, etc.), and it is part relaxation facility, with a variety of hot springs soaking options. There is a distinct New Age and slight counterculture aura here.
There are three rock-lined hot pools along the river along with four tiled soaking tubs, a cedar-tub cold plunge and a nearby sauna housed in a small cabin. Clothing is optional in and around all soaking areas, which are open 24-hours to overnight guests. Skinnydipping in the Breitenbush River is also common. Clothing is required in other areas.
Overnight accommodations and camping are available for workshop participants and other visitors, but day passes are also available for the soaking areas. Day use hours are 9 am - 6 pm, and rates start at about $20. Drop-in visits are not allowed. You must call ahead to reserve. The entire facility is closed for 3-4 day periods several times a year when it is reserved for private groups.
