The English Garden is one of the largest urban parks in the world. The park begins just northeast of Munich's city center and extends north for several kilometers along the west bank of the river Isar. Although quite long (north-south), the width of the park (east-west) ranges from about 500 to 1,000 meters.

The English Garden is quite famous for its custom of nude sunbathing, which dates back to the 60's. Although there are a few areas in the park where nude bathing occurs, the best known by far is Schönfeldwiese. When tourists stroll into the park to have a look at the naked people, this is where they go.

Schönfeldwiese is located at the far southern end of the park. It's the large open area just north of Haus der Kunst (a museum), and a stream called Schwabinger Bach bisects it. (See the two pinpointed footbridges over the stream.) By custom, nude bathing occurs on the west side of the stream, while the east side is textile. Some brave skinnydippers plunge into the stream, which is quite cold. The oblong track (see the red line), which spans about 350 meters from north to south, is a good aerial indicator of the scope of the FKK area (but in reality this track is too big to be perceived as a loop if you're standing in the middle of it).

Schönfeldwiese is Munich's most popular and centrally located FKK zone. The walk form Marienplatz (the city center) is just 1.5 kilometers. Such proximity to Munich's tourist center makes the naked bodies at Schönfeldwiese a bit of a tourist attraction as well. Be aware that Munich has many other public FKK areas that are off the radar of curious tourists.
