Pupplinger Au is a nature reserve along the river Isar just south of its confluence with the Loisach. (The Loisach is the river that flows north next to the pinpointed water treatment facility.) In this hidden, forest area, the riverbed of the Isar is quite wide, forming an island of pebbles and scrub. This area is very popular with nudists.

Pupplinger Au is located just northeast of Wolfratshausen, a town that is about 30 kilometers south of Munich. Although there are many places to sunbathe nude much closer to the center of Munich, Pupplinger Au is nonetheless quite popular with Münchner (i.e., people from Munich) because it is more remote and free of the curious onlookers that are present at the city's urban FKK areas. Attendance swells on weekends. Wolfratshausen is the southernmost town along Munich's S-bahn (line S7).

Pupplinger Au can be accessed either from the either west or east sides of the Isar. Either way, it is a rather longish hike of half an hour or more. Many visitors bring bicycles. If you hike in from the west side, you'll go by the water treatment plant, following a route that roughly parallels the Loisach. This route takes you close to the confluence, which is a predominantly gay area. Most gay visitors take this route, which is also the closest route for those arriving by S-bahn. If you hike in from the east side, leaving from Gasthaus Aujäger (pinpointed), you'll be walking parallel to the east bank of the Isar and will enter the area at a place frequented mostly by straight couples.

Depending on the river level, you may have to wade to get to the island. If the river level is low, you can find places to skip across the rocks.
