Heartland Cove, located on Smithville Lake about 27 miles north of downtown Kansas City, is a rather new nude beach. Heartland Naturists, a group serving the Kansas City and Topeka areas, has made an effort over the past decade to establish this unused and isolated cove (technically on Corps of Engineers land) as a site for naturists, and they have named it "Heartland Cove" after their group.

The particular situation of the cove—there is standing timber in the water—makes it inaccessible to water skiers and sailboaters, which greatly reduces the amount of boat traffic in the immediate area. Still, it is best to be discreet if anyone on the lake can see you naked. Since the cove is fairly isolated, non-nudist visitors are not likely to show up. You're likely to have the place to yourself on weekdays. On weekends, a scattering of people show up in the afternoon. There do not seem to be any kind of anti-nudity hassles here.
