Perdido Key is a long, narrow barrier island just off mainland Florida near Pensacola, extending about 15 miles east to west. (The extreme western end of Perdido Key is actually part of Alabama.) The eastern end of the key is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Johnson Beach is located within the national seashore near its boundary, and this beach is equipped with restrooms, picnic shelters and a concession store that is open during warmer months. And, as you might expect, there is absolutely no nudity here. However, the beach access road dead ends not far beyond the amenities of Johnson Beach, and the island continues about 6 miles past the end of the road. It is on this remote, little used and huge stretch of beach that you will find nude bathers.

Some local nudists discreetly sunbathe au naturel on distant parts of the island, and nudity seems to have become more common on Perdido now that Navarre Beach to the east of Pensacola is no longer a safe place for nudity. Since the undeveloped beach extends for miles, nude sunbathers may be scattered over quite a long distance. There are no clearly defined boundaries of the nude area, but you should walk east at least 15 minutes (and maybe a bit more) past the end of the road before disrobing. Rangers seem to patrol about twice a day, and—while they do not seem hell-bent on chasing down nudists—they have the authority to ticket for nudity. However, they patrol on ATV's, so you should have sufficient warning to suit up. You should be similarly discreet in the presence of passersby you suspect may not be like minded. Be sure to bring plenty of water. You'll be a long haul from the amenities of Johnson Beach.
