Prior Lake, located 12 kilometers northwest of downtown Victoria, is a pond within Thetis Lake Regional Park. While the park is centered around two much larger lakes—Upper Thetis and Lower Thetis—Prior Lake is tucked away from the main recreation areas of the large park.

About 100 meters in diameter, Prior Lake does not have a beach at all, but there is a dock built out into the lake, and this is where visitors sunbathe nude. Park officials have freely tolerated nudity at this hidden pond since the late 70's, and it seems that a group of naturists orchestrated the building of the dock. The dock can hold about 25 sunbathers and is often covered with bare bodies on weekends, with a dozen or fewer on weekdays. Some visitors bring air mattresses for floating in the water. Practically everyone is naked.
