Find on Google Maps
Conundrum Hot Springs, near Aspen in the White River National Forest, is the highest hot spring in North America at 11,500 feet. As you soak in either of the two pools, you'll have a panoramic view of the mountains that includes two peaks—Castle and Conundrum—that rise over 14,000 feet. Nude soaking is customary and well accepted, but you're likely to encounter a mix of nude and textile visitors.
Getting to the springs is no easy task. The hike to the springs is a moderately strenuous 8.5 miles with an elevation gain of 3,000 feet, but the thin air at this elevation compounds the difficulty. Only seasoned, in-shape hikers should attempt this trip. Although the round-trip of 17 miles can be done in a single day for those with exceptional stamina (leave early!), most hikers do it as an overnight trip. There is a campground (primitive, of course) near the springs. Pack as lightly as possible while keeping in mind you'll need a minimum of a day's worth of food and drink. The best times to go are June to early September, but hikers should always check with the National Forest ranger station in Aspen for current conditions and other advice before attempting the trip. On weekends, expect to encounter several dozen other visitors; the pools can be overcrowded. Consider doing the trip on a weekday if possible.
