Bagby Hot Springs supplies water to a primitive bathhouse nestled deep in the verdant lushness of Mt. Hood National Forest, about 68 miles southeast of downtown Portland. The facilities are maintained by a volunteer organization that has made special arrangements with the forest service to manage the area. Nudity is well established and accepted at the site, although there is a sign placed by the volunteers that politely asks visitors to be considerate of those who are offended by nudity.
There are two parts to the bathhouse: a row of private rooms with a soaking tub in each and a communal area with several tubs, covered by a roof but otherwise open to the outdoors. The communal area includes a circular wooden tub that can hold at most half a dozen soakers. There are also three unique tubs that are fashioned from large hulled-out logs, and each of these tubs can hold two soakers. The springs are very popular, and the site is often crowded on weekends and holidays.
Although the drive to the trailhead and the hike to the springs are easy, this site is quite remote. The nearest services are located nearly 40 miles away in Estacada. If you intend to travel to Bagby from another route, you should obtain a national forest map. Unfortunately, vandalism has increasingly become a problem at the trailhead parking area. There have been numerous reports of smashed-in windows. Do not leave valuables in your car. Furthermore, the trail to the springs is a very popular walk, so nude hiking is NOT recommended.
