The McCauley springs are nestled deep in the Santa Fe National Forest. The largest soaking pool is a warm, shallow pond that is about 40 feet across. The water temperature is about 95°F—pleasant but not especially hot. The water from the pond flows downhill into smaller soaking pool that have been built. These pools are somewhat cooler than the pond.

Nude soaking is well established, and rangers are generally tolerant. McCauley is theoretically subject to the same nudity hassles that have plagued nearby Spence (see the Spence placemark for more details). However, it seems to have escaped the scrutiny of the Sandoval County sheriff's department, which is less tolerant than the forest service. That doubtlessly is related to the fact that a 1.5-mile hike is necessary, make casual patrols much more of an effort. Of the three springs that we detail in this area—McCauley, Spence and San Antonio—McCauley is the most remote and least subject to official interference.
