Camp Gaea is one of those places that is difficult to categorize. This non-profit entity does not fit the mold of a standard naturist resort or retreat since nudity is not actively encouraged or required, and their website barely mentions nudity at all. We've classified it as a day-use park since the part of the property most interesting to nudists is the sandy lakeshore beach, where swimsuits are optional. However, camping (tent or RV) and cabins are available.
Variously described as a pagan retreat, a gay retreat or a nudist retreat, Camp Gaea is none of those per se, except when certain groups reserve the camp. The whole of Camp Gaea is often reserved for large group functions in a summer-camp fashion. Among the events that take place here are occasional Radical Faeries gatherings and the annual Midwest Male Naturist Gathering each June. At other times, it is simply a place for open-minded people of all ages. (Children are allowed.)
Camp Gaea does not promote itself as a clothing-optional establishment and nudity is not unrestricted, but in theory most of the grounds are open to clothing-optional use except for the public buildings (like the dining hall) and along the access roads. In practice, you'll encounter nudity mostly on the beach of the 12-acre lake and sometimes on more secluded parts of the property. Camp Gaea is very gay friendly and popular with free spirits of all stripes, both straight and gay. Before you drop in to visit, you need to check the camp's calendar on their website and/or call in advance. Generally open from April through October, the camp is closed to the general public when it is reserved for group functions, sometimes up to 10 days at a time. Day passes are just $5.
