Halensee is a small lake located in the western part of Berlin in an area called Wilmersdorf. It is southwest of the Tiergarten but east of the northern part of Forst Grunewald. Most of Halensee is surrounded by residences, but there is a large, grassy lawn on the northeast side of the lake that is an FKK zone. A line of trees is a privacy screen from the adjacent busy street (Halenseestrasse), which straddles an autobahn that is partially tunneled under Halenseestrasse.
Despite the traffic noise, the Halensee meadow is quite popular, drawing a few hundred visitors on warm weekends. About half the visitors here sunbathe in the nude. People sometimes play games like volleyball on parts of the meadow, and there is a roving food and beverage vendor. Swimming is possible, but sometimes entering the water is prohibited (namely when runoff from heavy rains diminishes the water quality).
At about 8 kilometers southwest of the city center, Halensee is among the more centrally located FKK areas of Berlin. It is located just west of Rathenauplatz, a prominent intersection at the end of Kurfürstendamm. Kurfürstendamm, often shorted to Ku'damm, is a broad avenue that runs from Europa-Center (by the Berlin Zoo) to Rathenauplatz, a distance of 3.6 kilometers, and is known for its upscale shopping. Kurfürstendamm is often called the Champs-Élysées of Berlin as well as Berlin's Shopping Mile (although technically it's a little over 2 miles long).
