The Baltic Sea resort town of Travemünde is a borough of Lübeck, which is the second largest city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Travemünde is located at the mouth of the large Bay of Lübeck (Lübecker Bucht). The main part of Travemünde is on the north and west side of the mouth of the bay. To the south and east of the mouth of the bay is a land mass called the Priwall peninsula, which is still considered part of Travemünde. Priwall is the easternmost coastal part of Schleswig-Holstein. The expansive, sandy beach extends about a kilometer within Schleswig-Holstein and then continues into the neighboring state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. (The state line is pinpointed.) The easternmost part of the beach that is within Schleswig-Holstein is designated for FKK use. As you walk east along the beach (to the right when facing the sea), the sign announcing the end of the FKK area is located just before the state line.

The border of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was once also the boundary between West Germany and East Germany. Before reunification, a fence delineated not only the end of the nude beach but the end of a freedoms of the West. Today, the fence is gone and visitors can stroll naked across the physical manifestation of a bygone ideological divide.
