Insel Poel is a sparsely populated island that is linked to the mainland via a causeway. The beach of the island's northern and western shoreline spans about 12 kilometers, and there are three developed beach areas along this span: Timmendorf, Schwarzen Busch and Gollwitz. Outside these three areas, nudity is commonly practiced along undeveloped parts of the beach. The most popular gathering place for nudists is the 2-kilometer-long west-facing beach that is south of the Timmendorf beach but north of a nature reserve. This beach is most commonly called Strand Wangern after the nearby inland village.

From the pinpointed parking lot, you will enter the beach at what is effectively its far southern end. As you face the sea, there is the fence across the beach to your left (south) that is the boundary of a nature reserve. The reserve is a protected area with no public access. To your right, the beach extends northward toward the textile beach of Timmendorf. This is a narrow, undeveloped beach backed by low cliffs and a band of forest, and most visitors cluster toward the southern end of the beach near the parking lot.
