Katzenbachsee is a small, roughly rectangular recreation lake that is about 250 meters long and 150 meters wide and mostly encircled by dense growths of trees. The lake is in a hilly, pastoral region of northern Baden-Württemberg that is designated as Naturpark-Stromberg-Heuchelberg, which is a large-scale preserve that encompasses a number of villages. The closest major town, Heilbronn, is 25 kilometers to the northeast of the lake.

Katzenbachsee is popular with nudists and textiles, who occupy different parts of the lake even though textiles are likely to pass by nudists along the lake's perimeter trail. The meadow on the west side of the lake, where a food concession is located, is by custom textile only. The meadow on the south shore of the lake (where this placemark is pinpointed) is nudist.

Nudists also gather on the north shore of the lake, where there is a narrow band of flat land along the lake shore. This shore is just downhill from the perimeter trail, but a stretch of vegetation provides some seclusion from passersby. There is a staircase from the trail to the shoreline.

Katzenbachsee is alternately known as Katzenbachstausee (stausee = reservoir) and Katzenbachsee bei Zaberfeld (to distinguish is from another lake of the same name in Stuttgart).
