The Frisian Islands are a long chain of island in the North Sea, offshore from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The chain stretches about 500 kilometers, and most of the islands are within 10 kilometers of the mainland. The Frisians are divided into three groups: West, East and North. The West Frisians belong entirely to the Netherlands. The East Frisians are entirely within Germany. The North Frisians are mostly in Germany, but a few of them belong to Denmark.
Norderney is in the middle of the East Frisians. The island is about 14 kilometers long from east to west, and it is a popular holiday destination. All the island's hotels and other services are located in the town of Norderney, which occupies the far western quarter of the island. The designated FKK beach lies approximately in the middle of the island's northern coast. Beyond the FKK beach going east, there is no development.
The popular FKK beach is well signed and served by a local bus line. There is a café called Oase at the entrance to the beach. Straight ahead from the beach entrance, there is a small sauna facility very close to the waterline. For information about and photos of the sauna, go to the tourist information website that is linked farther down and type "sauna" in the search (Suche) field that is on every page of the website.
GETTING THERE / PARKING:
Ferry service is from Norden on the mainland to Norderney town at the far west end of the island. The trip across the tidal waters is about 8 kilometers. It is possible but not necessary to transport an automobile on the ferry. The Reederei Frisia ferry website has schedule infomation available in German.
If you arrive with a car, turn right at the first intersection you reach as you leave the ferry dock. Follow Deichstrasse northeast for 1.5 kilometers, then bear right onto Karl-Rieger-Strasse and continue east another 1.8 kilometers. Turn right onto Am Dünensender, which will eventually become Am Golfplatz then Am Leuchtturm and it curves several times, generally heading southeast. At 2.7 kilometers after turning from Karl-Rieger-Strasse, you will reach a tall, prominent, red-brick lighthouse (Leuchtturm is the word for "lighthouse.") 600 meters past the lighthouse, turn left onto a beach access road that will dead end in 600 meters at Oase café, where there is a large parking lot at coordinates 53.7175, 7.2361 (Map It).
If you are without a car, you can take bus line 4. This line runs between town and the FKK beach, making a few stops along the way. The end stop is at the Oase café. Renting a bicycle is also a popular way to get around.
