Himmelgeist is a neighborhood of Düsseldorf that is about 7 kilometers south of the city center. Much of the surrounding area is a floodplain not suitable for urban development, so Himmelgeist has the character of a small village surrounded by farmland despite its proximity to dense urban neighborhoods. The undeveloped beach of Himmelgeist is a mix of sand and pebbles that extends several kilometers along the east bank of the Rhine, and the beach is sparsely populated except for the main point of entry.

The Rhine has many large kilometer markers that identify location, and the numbers get higher as you go downstream (generally north). The main textile part of the beach, which has the best area of sand, lies immediately south of a small passenger ferry ramp. The textile beach and the ramp are near kilometer 729. From the textile beach, go south (upstream, to the left when facing the river) about 10-15 minutes, and nudity becomes common near kilometer 728. Nudity is tolerated even though this area is apparently not a designated FKK area. Beyond kilometer 728, the beach is attended mostly by gay men.
