Hallstätter See is a long lake that extends about 7 to 8 kilometers north to south, nestled deep in the Alps, with mountains rising up abruptly along most of the shoreline. The lake is about 70 kilometers southeast of Salzburg. The most notable feature of Hallstätter See is Hallstatt, a postcard-perfect village that clings to the mountainside at the far southwestern end of the lake.

Freibadeanlage Winkl is a grassy beach that is located at the far southeastern end of the lake, near the village of Obertraun. This beach includes a designated FKK area that is located north of the main area (to the right when facing the lake). Access to Freibadeanlage Winkl is free of charge, and the beach has fantastic views of Hallstatt in the distance, which is about 2 kilometers away (as the crow flies) on the opposite shore of the lake.

Freibadeanlage Winkl is one of two beaches on Hallstätter See that has a designated FKK area. The other beach, Strandbad Untersee, is across the lake on the north shore and is detailed separately. The two FKK beaches are 12.5 kilometers apart by car, via the road that runs along the west shore of the lake and passes through Hallstatt. (There is no road that goes all the way along the eastern shore.) The is also a boat service that ferries visitors to various locations on the lake. The boat dock at Obertraun is north of Freibadeanlage Winkl, a walking distance of about 2 kilometers from the beach.
