The Neue Donau (or, in English, the New Danube) is a flood-control channel that parallels the east side of the Danube river in Vienna. The resulting island between the river proper and the man-made channel is Donauinsel (Danube Island), a long, narrow island that stretches over 20 kilometers. The New Danube is Vienna's nudist playground, and there are FKK areas near the southern and northern end of the island. This placemark pinpoints the FKK area that is near the northern end.
The designated FKK area begins a bit north of a bridge called Jedleseer Brücke, and the FKK area is often referred to as "Jedlesee," which is actually the name of the neighborhood on the east bank of the New Danube. The FKK area is well attended but does not draw crowds as large as those that gather toward the southern end of Danube Island, about 12 kilometers to the south. The main gathering place for nudists is a meadow that is about 300 meters north of Jedleseer Brücke. Keep going north and the number of nudists and people in general starts to thin out. Visitors can look to the west, across the main channel of the Danube, for great views of a large hill (425 meters high) called Leopoldsberg, which has a church at the top. Many tourists go to the top of this hill for its panoramic views of Vienna.
Starting at the pinpointed bus stop (Überfuhrstrasse), head west (toward the Danube) on the street Überfuhrstrasse. In just over 200 meters, the street will bend to the right (becoming Am Hubertusdamm). Keep straight ahead. You'll cross a pedestrian land bridge over the A22 autobahn. Just after the land bridge, continue across Jedleseer Brücke, which is a suspension bridge for pedestrians and bicycles that spans the New Danube. After crossing the bridge, you'll reach a "T" junction with another major path. Turn right and go north about 300 meters and you'll reach the start of the FKK area. If you have a car, you'll have to look for streetside parking somewhere in the vicinity of the bus stop, so the walking distance is about the same.
