Gänsehäufel is an island in a body of water called the Alte Donau ("Old Danube"). The Old Danube is a 5.5-kilometer-long oxbow-shaped stretch of the old course of the river that was cut off from a rerouted incarnation of the river in the 1800's for flood control. Gänsehäufel is located toward the southern end of the Old Danube. The entire island, which is at most one kilometer north to south and 500 meters east to west, is a recreation area called Gänsehäufelbad. This recreation area includes swimming pools, three grassy beach areas, playgrounds, restaurants and sports facilities. All three beaches have protected swimming areas.
The southeastern part of Gänsehäufelbad is a designated FKK zone. In this area, nudity is obligatory. The FKK area includes a small beach called called Südstrand. Another beach called Oststrand is divided between the textile and FKK areas. These two beaches, along with a third beach that is entirely within the textile are, are pinpointed by flags. The FKK zone, which is shaded in light red and covers about six acres, also includes restrooms, several outdoor showers, a restaurant and a sauna cabin. (The swimming pools are all in the textile area.)
The general admission fee to Gänsehäufelbad is about €4 to €5 per adult, with lower rates for children. Access to the FKK area is included in the general admission price.
From the pinpointed U-bahn station, you can take a free shuttle to and from Gänsehäufelbad. The shuttle runs on summer days when the weather is nice.
