The Maggia is a shallow river that flows southward through the scenic Maggia Valley, emptying into Lago Maggiore, a large lake that lies partly is Switzerland but mostly in Italy. In the village of Avegno, about 8 to 9 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the river at the lake, there is a spot along the Maggia that is a gathering place for nudists. The nudist area is just north of a textile campground called Camping Piccolo Paradiso. Nudity occurs only in a fairly limited area of 100 or so meters. Two pinpointed landmarks—the campground to the south and a waterfall to the north—are beyond the area where nudity occurs. The riverbank in the nudist area is very rugged, strewn with boulders, with small patches of sand here and there.

Nudity is not officially allowed. In fact, along the short path to the river that leaves from the bus stop (see the driving directions), there is a sign announcing in Italian and German that nudity is forbidden. However, the sign does not seem to be a deterrent, nor does there seem to be any anti-nudity enforcement.

The nude beach at Avegno is just 8 to 9 kilometers from other nudist sites along the Melezza (a tributary of the Maggia). The Melezza sites are described in another listing.

The Maggia and Melezza locations are in the canton of Ticino, which is the only part of Switzerland where Italian is the predominant language of the entire canton.
