Lac de Neuchâtel is a large, long lake (about 40 kilometers) that lies in the far west of Switzerland, in the francophone part of the country. (The lake is called Neuenburgersee in German.) There are no officially designated nudist areas along the lake, but there are two established areas where there is informal tolerance for nude bathing. Oddly enough, although Lake Neuchâtel has over 80 kilometers of shoreline, its two established nude beaches are just 4 kilometers apart. There is an informal nude beach on each side of the town of Yvonand. This placemark pinpoints the beach that is on the west side of town. (Another placemark details the other beach.)
VD8 is the name of a camping establishment that is just west of Yvonand and about 6 kilometers east of the much larger town of Yverdon-les-Bains. VD8's associated beach is operated as a public beach, with a restaurant and other amenities. At VD8, there are a series of about a dozen dikes that extend a short distance into the lake, creating small bays. Toward the eastern end, one of the bays contains the sandy beach that is the main textile beach. Just under a kilometer west of the main beach (to the left when facing the water), nudity is informally tolerated at the last of the bays. Visitors used to park along the road and hike directly to the nude area, bypassing the central part of VD8, but that is no longer possible since roadside parking is now prohibited. At the large VD8 lot, parking is free for the first two hours and inexpensive thereafter. Beyond the last of the dikes, nudity continues in the reedy area. This part of the lakeshore is occupied mostly by gay men.
