The city of Venice does have a beach—a 12-kilometer-long beach, in fact—but the beach is disconnected from the famous city of canals. Venice's beach is on Lido di Venezia (usually just called "the Lido"), which is the long island that is part of the chain of islands that separates Venice's lagoon from the Adriatic. Nude bathing occurs near the southern extreme of the Lido, along a stretch of beach backed by dunes and a small patch of forest. The nude area is a stretch of several hundred meters between the pinpointed developed textile beach and the pinpointed beach café at the southern extreme of the island. However, most nude bathing seems to take place in the dunes, especially on crowded days. Buffer zones should be left between both the textile beach and the beach café. The nude area tends to be visited mostly by gay men.
