Guadeloupe is popular with European tourists, but relatively few Americans visit this French-speaking island. English is not as widely spoken as it is on other Caribbean islands, so it is a good idea to learn a little French before you visit. The main island of Guadeloupe consists of two land masses—Grande-Terre to the east and Basse-Terre to the west—which are connected by a narrow isthmus. Plage Anse Tarare is a popular nude beach located on the north side of the peninsula that extends eastward from the southeast corner of Grande Terre. The beach is near Pointe des Châteaux, which is the easternmost point of the main island of Guadeloupe and a popular scenic attraction. Plage Anse Tarare is a west-facing cove that is wedged into a land mass called Pointe Tarare.
Anse Tarare is a small beach that has always been well attended, but it draws even larger crowds now that it is the only established nude beach on Guadeloupe. (Nudity used to occur on a small stretch of beach next to Club Med La Caravelle in Sainte-Anne, but nudity has been banned there since Club Med took over that beach circa 2000.) Many Pointe Tarare visitors are vacationers from France and Québec. Practically all visitors go naked. Because Pointe Tarare is small (less than 100 meters long), it often feels crowded. The beach is surrounded by reefs, and the water is great for swimming and snorkeling. There are no facilities on the beach, but there is sometimes a vendor who brings snacks and beverages to sell. Do not leave your belongings unattended since theft is reportedly a problem.
