Ilha de Tavira is a barrier island about 11 kilometers long. A segment of the beach toward the island's northeast end is designated for nudity. The nude area is halfway between the entry points of the two pinpointed textile beaches, which are 4 kilometers apart.

The nude beach can be approached from either end, and getting there is part of the fun. If you approach via Tavira town, you'll take a short ride on a passenger ferry to the estuary side of the island, walk across the island and then walk southwest to reach the nude area. If you approach via Pedras dél Rei, you'll cross a pedestrian pontoon bridge to reach the island, take a tourist train to Praia do Barril, then walk northeast to reach the nude area. From either direction, you may encounter nudists before you reach the actual signs announcing that nudity is allowed.

The nude beach of Tavira is quite popular, especially with foreign tourists. You'll find beach amenities at either of the two textile beaches. Additionally, there is a longer and more sparsely populated nude beach on the other side of Praia do Barril.
