East Beach, located just a mile east of Brighton's famous pier, is one of the world's rare nude beaches to be located in the heart of an urban area. It is an officially designated and signed naturist beach that tends to provoke strong reactions. A good many naturists regard it as another of Brighton's many amusements set up for tourists, namely the clothed variety who wander by to have a look. The designated nude area extends 200 yards, corresponding to the red line, with signs at both ends announcing naturist use. A low embankment of pebbles surrounds the naturist area on three sides and clearly defines the area without providing any privacy from passersby. This embankment makes it very easy to recognize the nude area as you approach. Volk's Electric Railway (a tourist attraction) runs behind the beach, parallel to Madeira Drive. The track has fences on both side, but there are a few openings in the fence you can cross to get to the beach. As you might expect at a place where it is so easy for curious onlookers to gawk at naked bodies, attendance by women is low. To avoid prying eyes, just go west 4.5 miles to Shoreham Harbour Beach, which is likewise very easy to access but off the radar of tourists.
