Walney Island is a long island just offshore from the mainland, connected by a bridge. The island spans about 10 miles from north to south, and nude bathing is unofficially accepted at the far northern extreme of the island. Assuming that you park as far north as possible along the beachside driving track, you still need to walk at least a mile farther (on the beach or in the dunes) before stripping down. At first you will be going directly north, and you can see where the beach curves toward the northeast ahead of you. Follow this curvature a bit and you will reach the accepted nude area, which extends to the end of the beach at the tip of the hook-shaped peninsula that forms the northern end of Walney Island. The nude area spans at least 2/3 mile, which is ample considering that there are usually just a smattering of bare bodies. Standing on the beach facing the water, you will be looking northwest across the Duddon Estuary, with beautiful views of the hills in the distance.
