The beach on the northeast side of Aberlady Bay (the mud flats north of Aberlady) is a broad, sandy beach backed by dunes. The beach extends about 3/4 mile, and, although it is a just half an hour by car from Edinburgh, it is sparsely attended, probably because a 1.3 mile walk is required to reach the beach, nor is there enough parking to accommodate crowds. Part of the land between the beach and the highway (A198) is a nature reserve; the rest is a golf course.

Nudity is practiced on the beach, and the small number of nude bathers here are mostly gay men. Nude bathers tend to stay toward the northeast end of the beach, with an appropriate buffer area from the access trail. Furthermore, nude bathing tends to occur mostly in the dunes. Nudity on the open beach should be practiced with discretion as textile dog walkers or other strollers sometimes pass through. Nudity on the open beach seems more common toward evening, perhaps because any possibility of a beach patrol has ended by then (just a theory). The reserve warden is said to turn a blind eye to nudity in the dunes but may not be as unmindful of nudity in the open.
