Numerous internet reports describe Cleat's Shore as an "official" nude beach, but we can't for the life of us find the answers to the questions "By whose authority?" and "Why here?" An author of Bare Britain said of this beach in a Times Online interview: "I suspect it’s probably the least visited nudist beach in the known universe." Whatever the case, attendance is sparse, even though you can drive all the way to the beach. With about 5,000 permanent residents, the island of Arran lacks the critical mass of people for a nude beach to flourish, and, while Arran draws plenty of tourists, they don't come to bask on the beach... with or without swimwear. If you visit Arran, which is a beautiful island with rugged scenery typical of the Scottish Highlands, this beach is a very easy excursion if you travel the entirety of the island's 55-mile-long perimeter road. Is is worth a special trip just for the nude beach experience? That's doubtful.
