Frechman's Hole is a swimming hole in the White Mountains of southwestern Maine, in the popular Sunday River ski resort area (near the town of Bethel). Located along Bull Branch (a tributary of the Sunday River), Frenchman's Hole is a large, beautiful pool located below a waterfall. While some discreet skinnydipping occurs here, this is generally considered the domain of textiles. However, go downstream a short distance by scrambling over rocks and you'll reach pools that are customarily visited by skinnydippers. These pools are for the most part known only to locals.
On the way here, 3.6 miles along Sunday River Road from the highway turnoff (and 0.3 mile past the second major fork), you pass next to a covered bridge that was built in 1872 (now open to foot traffic only). Commonly called "Artist's Bridge," this is the most photographed and painted of Maine's covered bridges, so be sure to stop.
