Miacomet is a dune-backed beach that is the only established nude beach on Nantucket, drawing small crowds of nudists for at least several decades. The nude area is a little west of Miacomet Pond, a long pond that sometimes spills out to the ocean. Until a few years ago Miacomet was open to four-wheel drive traffic (i.e., vehicles could drive directly on the sand), but that has ended due to beach erosion. That's actually a good thing for nudists since curious onlookers can no longer casually cruise by. Miacomet remains very easily accessible since there are several small parking areas adjacent to the nude area. If you are without transportation, you can access Miacomet through neighboring Surfside Beach (see details below). Miacomet is undeveloped; Surfside has restrooms, showers and a food concession.

Authorities patrol on ATV's but don't bother nudists even thought nudity is not officially allowed.. They are reportedly more concerned with enforcing a ban on glass containers than with anyone's state of dress (or undress). Miacomet is frequented mostly by those who vacation in Nantucket yearly, and it is not widely known to day trippers.

You can do a day trip to Nantucket if you time it carefully. Overnight accommodations are expensive.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION: Other than flying to Nantucket, your other option is to take a ferry from Hyannis. Steamship Authority operates an automobile ferry (crossing time of 2 hours, 15 minutes). Both Steamship Authority and Hyline Cruises operate high-speed passenger ferries (one-hour crossing time). You will most likely opt for the passenger ferry since the automobile ferry is quite expensive. Assuming you arrive without a vehicle, you may want to rent a set of wheels in Nantucket town. Remember that renting a bicycle is an alternative to renting a car. Biking around Nantucket is a sensible option since the distance from one end to the other is less than 15 miles. Another alternative is the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority shuttle. There is a shuttle from Nantucket town to Surfside Beach every 40 minutes during summer. Surfside Beach (pinpointed) is about 3/4 mile east of the nude area.
