The swimming holes of the Rock River near Brattleboro are very popular with skinnydippers. The river's water is contained mostly in the depressions that form natural pools. As you hike from one pool to the next, you'll be walking along a mostly dry creek bed. There are four pools in the Rock River within a mile of its confluence with the West River. As you hike upstream, you'll first reach the largest of the pools. Most of the time, it is the exclusive domain of textiles. Three more swimming holes are spread out over the next half mile or so upstream, and all of them are freely used by nudists. The second pool is where straight nudists converge. The third and fourth pools are visited mostly by gay men. There are small sandy areas in the creek bed where nude sunbathing is common.

Rock River—specifically the third and fourth pools—has the reputation as the gayest nude swimming hole in Vermont. There may be up to 50 visitors here on summer weekends and usually at least a handful on sunny weekdays.
