Less than 10 miles south of Rutland, the Mill River flows through a narrow, picturesque gorge—named Clarendon Gorge because it is near the village of Clarendon—that is full of wonderful rock formations. The gorge begins just east of US Highway 7 and is accessed at several points from an unpaved road that runs along the north side of the gorge. Textile swimmers gather at the west end of the gorge near the beginning of Gorge Road, but nudity becomes common in an area of the gorge that begins about half a mile upstream and extends east about 1.5 miles to the high suspension footbridge that spans the gorge. (The bridge is an Appalachian Trail/Long Trail crossing.)

Most nudists seem to cluster in the area that is about a mile from the start of Gorge Road. There are several swimming holes and flat areas for sunbathing along the creek, but the terrain of the gorge does not make it possible to do a continuous hike from one end to the other. The descent into the gorge is tricky in places, so use caution. Clarendon Gorge is the most popular skinnydipping site in central Vermont.
