Chittenden Reservoir, about 10 miles northeast of Rutland, is a small lake that covers about one square mile, and part of this lake is a favorite spot of local skinnydippers. Along the hike from the dam, you'll pass a couple of small coves where textiles congregate, then you'll reach a rocky point—Congdon's Point—that marks the traditional nude area, although nudists may also scatter on other more remote parts of the lake. Although nude bathing is customary here, Chittenden Reservoir is not widely known except to locals. You may find a handful visitors on sunny days. On hot days, the water on the shallow shoreline warms up (that is, relative to other Vermont areas), making this a good swimming area.
