Lighthouse Beach is the most popular nude beach on Long Island. Although you have to park at Robert Moses State Park (with an entry fee of about $10) to reach the beach, the nude beach is actually beyond the state park boundary. Lighthouse Beach is part of Fire Island National Seashore, and the National Park Service (NPS) freely tolerates nudity here—so much so that they have allowed signs to be erected notifying visitors that "Beyond This Point You May Encounter Nude Sunbathers." The signs were not actually put up by the NPS but rather by Friends of Lighthouse Beach, a naturist group founded to ensure the continuation of the beach's clothing optional status. On peak summer weekends, Lighthouse Beach can be packed with upwards of a thousand visitors. Crowds are much smaller although still substantial on weekdays. There are no amenities on the nude beach—not even trash cans, so plan to pack out your garbage. Restrooms and a snack bar are located at the textile state beach (where you park).

The nude beach is located at the Fire Island Lighthouse (thus the name of the beach). The clothing-optional zone is actually split into two sections—one west of the lighthouse, one east of it. Clothing is required on the area of the beach directly in front of the lighthouse. The western nude zone, closest to the parking lot, is generally preferred by straight couples and families. The eastern zone, about half a mile long, is a little over twice the length of the western zone and, although well attended, is far less densely populated. Gay men tend to gather near the eastern end of the eastern zone.
