Mohonk Preserve is an area of over 6,000 acres in the northern Shawangunk Mountains of southern New York, west of Poughkeepsie. The preserve is open to the public but is privately funded and managed. Because the preserve is not operated as a public entity (like the state park system), Mohonk officials have been much more flexible about allowing nude use. Since 1995, there have been signs posted in part of the preserve along Coxing Kill ("kill" means creek) that inform visitors that nudity may be encountered. Mohonk officials patrol the area vigilantly to ensure that lewd behavior is minimized.

The nude area of Coxing Kill, which is downstream from a popular textile swimming hole called Split Rock, has a shallow pool for skinnydipping and flat rock areas for sunbathing. Small crowds of users gather in the nude area. This area tends to be quiet on weekdays but very popular on warm weekends. Other than portable toilets in the parking area, there are no amenities or services here.

Parking at all the preserve's lots fills up quickly on warm summer weekends and holidays, and the Coxing Trailhead lot is the smallest in the preserve. Arrive early or visit on a weekday.
