The nude beach on Lake Mead about 25 miles east of the Las Vegas strip does not seem to have a proper name, so we've dubbed it "Eight Mile Road Beach" after the name of the access road. Locals just refer to it as the "Lake Mead Nude Beach." Located on federal land that is part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), this site is populated mostly by gay men. This is not a beach in the traditional sense. There is no broad swath of sand, the area is stark and rocky, and the only vegetation is desert scrub. There have never been very distinct boundaries defining a specific nude zone, and this vagueness has been accentuated by unusually low lake levels over the past decade.
As for whether or not discretion is necessary, the answer is both "yes" and "no." "No" in that it is very unlikely that anyone not looking for the nude beach is going to accidentally find it, so once you are a sufficient distance from the parking area, you will be among like-minded people. "Yes" in that it is a bad idea to be nude within sight of passing boaters on the lake as that could spur complaints. Consequently, nudity is practiced freely in areas sheltered by brushy cover (which provides little shade, incidentally), but discretion is called for next to the water. LMNRA officials are not particularly friendly toward nudists at this site and have the authority to issue tickets that carry steep fines. However, patrols by land seem to be very infrequent. Boat patrols are a possibility—yet another reason not to be visibly naked in view of boats on the lake. Furthermore, don't be nude within sight of the parking area since there may be a handful of textiles nearby. Be absolutely sure to bring plenty of drinking water since it gets extremely hot here and there is little shade.
