Gray Whale Cove (a.k.a. Devil's Slide Beach) has been part of the California State Parks system since 2001. Prior to 2001, the beach had for years been privately run by owners who opened the beach to clothing-optional use. Amazingly, when the beach changed hands, the state agreed to respect the nude tradition here and apparently has a policy of simply telling anyone that complains about nudity to choose another beach.

Unfortunately, the state has not posted any signs announcing that nudity is tolerated, and the state park system website for some reason no longer even mentions that the beach is clothing optional. The percentage of textile visitors has increased, and nudists are generally a minority of a quarter to half the crowd. The beach, which stretches over a quarter mile, may attract up to 200 visitors on peak weekends, but crowds are normally much smaller. The north end of the beach has the largest concentration of bare bodies. There is a small entry fee.
