Muir Beach is a small beach in the community of the same name. The main beach, a broad and sandy cove, is textile. The narrow northern extension of the beach, which is strewn with rocks, is where nudists gather. The entire beach can draw hundreds of visitors on warm weekends, but textile and nude users tend to co-exist peacefully in their separate areas. The parking lot often fills up by 11 a.m. on summer weekends. If you want to get an all-over tan, don't dawdle; the sun goes behind nearby cliffs in mid-afternoon. You have to walk over a small area of rocks to reach the nude area, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

Muir Beach has been a hassle-free nude beach for years. The only recent trouble here stems from complaints about nudity from a local homeowner in 2000 and 2001. Marin County sheriff's deputies had to respond to the homeowner's repeated calls and showed up on several occasions to order nudists to dress. However, officials in liberal Marin County only respond to complaints and do not otherwise hassle nudists (and they will not write a ticket unless the naked person flat out refuses to get dressed). The irascible homeowner has reportedly moved away, or perhaps he just decided he was fighting a losing battle. Whatever the case, there haven't been any complaints to warrant visits from sheriff's deputies since 2001, so there is very little cause to worry about being naked here.
