College Cove is part of a large property designated as Trinidad State Beach, but it is about a mile north of the main beach parking lot and is accessed from its own parking area. Altogether the crescent-shaped beach is a bit more than 1/3 mile long. From the parking area, there are two access trails. One takes you to the northern end of the beach and the other takes you to the southern end. Because of this, the beach is conventionally spoken of as though there are two areas: College Cove North and College Cove South. However, the beach actually consists of three coves. There is a middle cove between the two coves where the access trails land, and all three coves are about the same size.

Nudity is known to sometimes occur on all parts of College Cove, but the northern two-thirds of the beach is most often occupied only by textiles, especially on more crowded days. Nudity is commonplace on the southern third of the beach, where nudists and textiles intermingle. Usually no more than half of visitors to this end of the beach are nude. The southern cove is defined by a rocky outcropping that separates it from the rest of the beach at high tide, but usually it is possible to walk around the rock. If you take the southern access trail from the parking area, you will land on the beach just south of the outcropping, where you may immediately encounter nudists. The water is too cold for swimming unless you're really brave.

Tiny Trinidad is bestowed with two nude beaches, one on each end of town. From College Cove, it is just a 2.5-mile drive to Baker's Beach, the other nude beach.
