Waialea Bay, near the northern end of the Big Island's western coast, is located north of the village of Puako and about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona. The quarter-mile-long main beach of Waialea Bay is a textile beach informally known as Beach 69. There is a small headland at the north end of Beach 69, and about 400 feet beyond the end of the beach there is a tiny cove that is usually known as Beach 67. This beach, which is just 100 or so feet in length, is well established as a nude beach. Because Beach 69 and Beach 67 are separated by private property, it is not advisable to hike over the headland to get from one beach to the other. However, informal parking is possible directly above Beach 67.
Beach 67 has a small ribbon of sand, and there is plenty of shade behind the beach. In the past few decades Beach 67 has become more popular in light of the troubles at Honokohau Beach 25 miles to the south (which at one time was the most popular beach on the Kona coast). Still, crowds are small. Since this is a hidden beach unlikely to be visited except by those in the know, anti-nudity hassles seem unlikely, even though nudity is not officially tolerated.
Note: As you are driving toward the beach, you will notice that the utility poles along the road are numbered, the numbers on these poles are the origins of the names of Beach 69 and Beach 67. The parking lot for Beach 69 is relatively new, and the new access to the beach is actually between poles 72 and 71, but the road leading to Beach 67 still begins next to pole 67.
