Lady Bay Beach, also well known as "Lady Jane," is one of Australia's oldest legal nude beaches, having first attained an official clothing-optional status in 1976. Lady Bay is a popular beach that seems to be better known to tourists than Sydney's other nude beaches. The beach is located near the tip of South Head peninsula (most of which is occupied by a military base), just north of the Watsons Bay community. Lady Bay is on the west side of the peninsula. If you are on the beach looking straight across the harbor, the suburb of Mosman is directly in front of you, and the skyline of downtown Sydney is off to your left. The views are spectacular. Lady Bay is quite a small beach, and it can become crowded on weekends. It is attended predominantly by gay men, and it is one of the two most popular gay nude beaches in the Sydney area—the other being Obelisk. Tourists who go to the lighthouse at the tip of South Head often stop by Lady Bay to gawk at nudists, particularly on weekends. (This is a problem that Obelisk and Cobblers do not have since few casual tourists know how to find them.) There are restrooms near the stairs that descend to Lady Bay, and there is a snack shop at Camp Cove.
