Elizabeth Beach is a small coastal village located in an area called the Great Lakes, about 280 kilometers north of Sydney and about halfway between Newcastle and Port Macquarie. The village is about 20 kilometers south of the twin towns of Forster and Tuncurry, which collectively form the largest town in the general vicinity. Elizabeth Beach has two beaches. The main beach has the same name as the village, and there is smaller beach across a headland to the east of the main beach. This smaller beach is Shelly Beach, which is a secluded cove about 250 meters long accessed by a wooded walk of about 500-600 meters over a small hill. Shelly Beach is a favorite of nude bathers and is even promoted as a nude beach on the Great Lakes tourism website. However, it is not officially designated as clothing optional. Shelly Beach is almost always uncrowded and is often deserted or nearly so.

It should be noted that there are a few other beaches in Australia named "Shelly" or "Shelley," and there is a Shelly Beach about 130 kilometers to the north in Port Macquarie that is adjacent to a nude beach called Miners Beach. This is mentioned just because it can be easy to confuse these beaches when doing internet searches for information.
