Byron Bay is a popular resort town on the far northern coast of New South Wales, within an hour's drive of the border with Queensland. The town is next to Cape Byron, a headland that is the most easterly point of mainland Australia. There is a long sandy beach that extends over 7 kilometers south from Cape Byron, and the far south end of it is Broken Bay Beach (also known as Tallow Beach). Continuing south beyond the headland at the end of Broken Bay Beach, the first major cove beach is Kings Beach. It is a hidden beach that stretches about 200 meters, and it has a long history as a nude beach even though it lacks an official designation as such. Kings Beach is an especially beautiful beach backed by a lush tropical forest. It is attended predominantly by gay men and is widely acclaimed as one of Australia's most notable gay beaches. (Straight naturists tend to choose nearby Belongil Beach, about 20 kilometers to the north.)
There is a small parking lot above Kings Beach, and from there a well-defined path goes downhill through the dense forest, landing at the north end of the beach. Parking is limited. If you can't find parking in the lot or anywhere nearby, another access option is to go to Broken Head Beach at the end of Broken Head Reserve Road (next to the caravan park). Facing the ocean, go to your right (south) on the coastal walkway that skirts the headland. From the end of the walkway, you'll have a clear view of Kings Beach a few hundred meters in the distance. The final part of the walk involves going across a few tiny coves and over some low rocky outcroppings.
