Amrum is one of the North Frisian Islands, a cluster of North Sea islands in the vicinity of the border of Germany and Denmark. A single north-south highway through Amrum (L215) is 9 kilometers long and connects its three towns: Wittdün, Nebel and Norddorf. Amrum's west-facing beach spans more than 12 kilometers, and it is notable for its exceptional beauty and width. The beach is backed by large, lush dunes. Depending on the tide, the distance from the dunes to the waterline can exceed 500 meters.

Nudity is acceptable most anywhere along the beach away from textiles, and there are three areas—one in each of the three towns—where nudists cluster. This placemark pinpoints the southern of the three FKK areas, in Wittdün. This part of the beach is easily identifiable by the tall red and white lighthouse that is behind the beach. Of the three FKK areas, the Wittdün beach is the most popular since is is located adjacent to a primitive FKK camping area that is nestled in the huge field of dunes between the beach and the lighthouse. The two other FKK areas are pinpointed by other placemarks.

Transporting a car to Amrum is possible but not necessary. Bicycles are a popular way to get around, and there is also a bus service that links all three towns, with stops at access points to all three FKK areas. Buses run every half hour during peak season and hourly at other times. The website Amrum.de provides essential information about visiting the island and is available in German, English, Danish and Turkish.

GETTING THERE / PARKING:

The ferry terminal is located at the southern end of Amrum in Wittdün, and you can arrive as a passenger or with a car. If you plan to take a car, you'll need to reserve in advance. The principal ferry route to Amrum is from the mainland town of Dagebüll. During summer, there is direct Dagebüll-Amrum service twice a day that takes 90 minutes, but there is more frequent service via a ferry that stops at the nearby island of Föhr and takes two hours. It is also possible to reach Amrum from the mainland town of Schlüttsiel, either via the island of Hooge or Langeness, but service is far less frequent than from Dagebüll. The website Faehre.de has ferry information in Germany, English and Danish. Another ferry operator, Adler-Schiffe, offers additional routes to Amrum from the mainland town of Nordstrand and from Hörnum on the island of Sylt.

To go to the southern FKK beach (Wittdün): From the ferry dock at Wittdün, you'll be filtered onto L215, the highway that runs the length of the island and connects the three towns. Follow L215 north and west for 2.8 kilometers to a parking lot on the right, at coordinates 54.6324, 8.3589 (Map It). This is the parking area for the southern of the three FKK beaches (where this placemark is pinpointed), and it is easily identifiable by the tall red and white lighthouse that is just 250 meters away. Across the highway from the parking lot, there are two trails. With your back to the parking lot, the trail to your right goes to the lighthouse, while the trail to your left is an 800-meter-long beach access path that skirts the edge of the primitive FKK campground and leads directly to the FKK beach.

To go to the central FKK beach (Nebel): Follow the previous directions, but keep going north on L215 for 2.2 kilometers past the lighthouse, at which point L215 will make a 90° leftward curve and begin to go west. After 400-500 meters, L215 will make another 90° curve, this one to the right. Instead of following the second curve, continue straight ahead (west) and after 1.1 kilometers you will reach Nebel beach parking at coordinates 54.6466, 8.3281 (Map It). Facing the sea, the FKK area is to your right (north).

To go to the northern FKK beach (Norddorf): Follow the previous directions, but continue along L215 at the second curve in Nebel. After another 3.4 kilometers, as you arrive in Norddorf, there is a large parking lot on the left, at coordinates 54.6779, 8.3307 (Map It). From this lot, there are trails and boardwalks through the immense field of dunes that lead directly to the FKK beach, via a hike of more than one kilometer. Alternatively, you can continue through Norddorf to the other of the two beach parking areas, which is at coordinates 54.6872, 8.3238 (Map It). This lot directly abuts the textile beach. Facing the sea, the FKK area is to your left (south). Both approaches lead to the same area.
